Barolo, SoHo

Last night, it was my friend Lauren’s turn to pick the restaurant for our monthly former ELLE employee get together (minus 1), and the pick of the month was Barolo in SoHo.  The #1 feature that our “June” restaurant had to possess was al fresco dining, and this spot did not disappoint.

Upon arrival, we were a little taken back because the restaurant was completely empty, but once we were led to the back “garden” area, we were very much impressed with what Barolo had to offer… Not to mention, it was one of the most perfect summer nights we could have ever asked for.

We each ate approximately seven loaves of bread (it was absolutely delicious), and in order to prevent ourselves from feeling completely disgusting, we each got the Insalata Di Spinaci E Fragole, aka a spinach and strawberry salad with almonds and gorgonzola cheese.  I’m not a big fan of fruit in my salads (aside from tomatoes, of course), but this was absolutely mouth watering.

I definitely plan on making another appearance this summer.

Rubirosa, Nolita & Brinkley’s

One of my girlfriends took me here for an early Birthday dinner on Monday night (such a good friend), and what can I say, other than that she knows me very well.  It was the perfect little Italian spot for a Monday night bite.  Although I had yet another sub-par experience with yet another wait staff (so. slow.), I would highly recommend it for a cozy little date spot.

After dinner, we decided to hit up Brinkley’s, a bar I hadn’t been to in literally 3 years.  I also had no recollection of where Brinkley’s was even located, until I saw it in broad daylight.

We both ordered specialty cocktails… the Brinkley’s Own “Born Again Virgin” Limeade for me, and the Pimms Cup for Alyssa.  Both were delicious.  We also got free chocolates from the bartender, which was obviously the icing on the cake.

craving a bit of quiet now…

I went out to dinner with my friend, Alyssa, last night, and we were discussing the iPhone.  I was having another “should I, or shouldn’t I”  moment.  Should I take the plunge and go Apple once my plan is up?  Having two Blackberries is not nearly as rich cool as having a Blackberry and an iPhone.  So when she told me to play around on this mini portable computer, I happily obliged.

Alyssa is one of those people who strongly believes in horoscopes and astrology and everything that I strongly do not believe in.  So I found myself passing the time with her “ELLE UK Daily Horoscopes” application. Why not?

Like I said, I’m not one to believe in horoscopes, but after the past few weeks I’ve had, I can’t deny how much the below resonated with me.

Blazer Fever

When I was in high school, people used to make fun of me for wearing blazers.  I’d get comments like, “going to the office today?” or “what are you so dressed up for?“.  Kids can be cruel.

Anyway, I’ll never forget my 3 blazers from high school (especially because I just gave all but 1 away).  They were from the GAP, and they were dark brown, stone, and olive green (obviously).

Little did I know back then, that the blazer would soon be one of the #1 staples in my wardrobe.  Through the years, I’ve collected too many to count…  from the classic black or navy, to green, glittered, and even orange.

Since it’s summertime and I’m one for color, I have not been able to get enough of my cropped orange blazer from Zara— you may have seen it pictured here and here. It’s the perfect jacket to throw over a t-shirt and jeans, and the color goes with more than I’d ever imagined.  It also seems to be my Broadway play go-to jacket.  I’m always cold, so blazers are literally a necessity for my day-to-day.

Most recently, I am loving bright colored blazers, similar to my punchy orange go-to.  I’ve had my eyes on this kelly green double-breasted blazer from Zara for months, and the constant back and forth of “hmm… should I, or shouldn’t I?” made me decide that I shouldn’t.

Well, now of course since Pips was sporting something very similar in blue, those dreams are long gone.  Fortunately, there are plenty of other fish in the sea.

Hydrangeas are my absolute favorite flower… in fact, I plan to carry them in my wedding someday, whenever that may be.  So when June (a.k.a. Hydrangea season) arrives, I can’t help myself from taking hundreds of pictures of the hundreds of different hues of this fabulous flower.

My neighbor has Hydrangea bushes lining the perimeter of his house, so last weekend, I found myself strategically stealing cutting several stems for my own personal use as I was walking my dog at 11:30pm…

His Hydrangeas must be magical because low and behold, nearly five days and one car ride later, they still look fresh.
