Necessary Furnishings

Ever since moving into my Charleston apartment, I have been in the market for furniture–preferably pieces with generous surface areas.

The top 3 pieces on my list in order to complete my new space include:

1. A bar cart (Society Social)  |  2. A bookcase (Crate&Barrel)  |  3. A desk (Home Decorators Collection)

After unpacking all of my belongings, I soon realized that,  A. I’m a little bit of a hoarder and  B. I am in dire need of a bookcase.

Piles of coffee table books, candles and back issues from jobs past are currently resting on my floor, with nowhere to go (see below… even Riley has had enough!).  I literally keep every single issue I’ve ever worked on/have had my name published in. My mom says, “why can’t you just keep the first issue?” I must admit, she has a point, and I’m sure that time will come soon enough.

I need a bookcase, pronto. I also realized that a bar cart, as much as I’ve been lusting after one, should really fall to the end of that list.  It is by no means a necessity at this point in my tight budget life.

The leaning bookcase from The Container Store is currently propped up in my bedroom, and it holds some of my most coveted accessories… from handbags and clutches to pumps, sunglasses and bracelets.  I guess it’s more of an accessories tower than anything else.  I love that bookcase, but I felt that I needed something a bit larger for the main room.

I was on a mission to find the perfect piece, but I ended up ordering something very similar to the one I currently own.  I stumbled upon Havertys when driving around one afternoon and was drawn to the Springdale bookcase.  It was the perfect color, the perfect size, and it was on sale. Perfect.

After being down here for nearly two months (I can’t believe it, either), I am very anxious to get this junk off my floor see the final product!

White Whites

I have the tendency to commit the ultimate fashion “faux-pas”. I wear black with navy, black with brown, black with brown and navy, and… white, before Memorial Day.

Whatever, the unofficial star to summer comes early here, give me a break! Yes, I have worn white pants at least 3+ times prior to Memorial Day, but I really don’t see a problem with that and I refuse to let anybody pass judgment on people who make the same choice that I do.

Now that the official start to summer has officially arrived, I have been eyeing all things white–white pants, white dresses, white tunics, white tees… It’s important to keep those summer whites just that–white.

1. DKNY dress  |  2. Superga sneakers  |  3. DKNY skirt  |  4. House of Harlow necklace

5. J.Crew top  |  6. Tory Burch swimsuit  |  7. J.Crew jeans  |  8. J.Crew blazer  |  9. ZARA tunic

you haven’t lived…

until you’ve experienced NASCAR.

It’s true.  I was 100% against anything having to do with NASCAR three years ago… until I actually experienced it for myself. Once you get your first taste of NASCAR, I guarantee that you’ll never lose the itch.  Come hell or high water (or torrential rain and a 3+ hour drive from Charleston to Charlotte), I made it my business to be there.

Where else can you tailgate outside all day and bring your own food and beverages into the stadium for the main event?

Only at NASCAR.

It’s such an adrenaline rush, and the rush you feel is indescribable–especially to somebody who has never been. This is why I strongly suggest everyone goes if given the opportunity–at least once.  As for me, I’ll continue to make it my business to be there every year for as long as I live in the Southeast.

Yes, these people are real. And this really happened.

And those are really cars… going really, really fast.

Crave & Save: The Floral Blazer

I have been on the hunt for the perfect floral blazer and after spotting these two lookalikes, I decided it was time to get back to writing my “Crave&Save” themed posts that I originated three years ago on cheapchicas.com (although I now see that my credit has been removed from all posts).

These two blazers, one by ZARA, and the other by Stella McCartney, although they look similar, are actually more than $1,700 apart. Crazy!

Some other great floral blazers, below…

Topshop, $136  |  ZARA, $100  |  Rag & Bone, $346

First Trip Back.

My first trip back to New York was surreal, to say the least.  I felt like Alice, from Alice in Wonderland… In my mind I had been gone for so long, but upon my return, it was almost as though I had never left.

I felt my first pangs of regret within the first few hours of my trip.  Landing in New York felt strange.  I almost felt like a guest in my own home.  For the first time, in a long time, New York was the first leg of my trip, as opposed to my last.

Ladies & gentlemen, the captain has turned on the fasten seatbelt sign.  We have now begun our initial descent into New York LaGuardia Airport.  Please put your tray tables up and your seat backs forward…

I watched as the rows of passengers in front of me eagerly gazed out their windows at the vast city below.  A city that was once mine.  A city of opportunity to so many.  I felt my throat close up… You could tell who was coming and who was going.  The home team and the visitors.  I didn’t see the skyline below, nor did the young boy in the Mets t-shirt, or the man sitting next to him in the Rolex, who I assumed to be the boy’s father.  I guess we were the home team. Too consumed, too busy to stop for even a minute to enjoy the beautiful view below us.

New York is a powerful city that will consume you, whether you love it or hate it.  Sometimes it consumes you with love–other times, with utter hate.  Seeing a familiar face at the airport consumed me with love.  Driving over the Triborough Bridge, zero traffic, staring at the Manhattan skyline consumed me with love.  Dropping my suitcase off at Mike’s apartment to then walk the 28 blocks to Shake Shack, hand-in-hand, consumed me with love.

And then just as I was saying how much I missed New York–how much I missed this peaceful neighborhood–how much I missed this very walk we used to take each month (sometimes more)–we pass a homeless man with his pants down.  True story.

Oh, New York… always so full of surprises.

Despite the, uh, episode on our walk, despite the fact that my fries were too crispy, despite the fact that a torrential downpour canceled our boat cruise on Saturday afternoon and despite the rude waitress and my subpar meal at Crispo, the time spent with the people who matter most to me is what was so memorable and so special about my first trip back.  That feeling is irreplaceable.

I so miss having these on every other street corner.

Only in New York would this scene appear completely normal.

The ultimate lunch break view in NYC.

No way we were going to let a thunderstorm rain on our parade!

One day prior, on May 10, 2013,

One World Trade Center was officially named the tallest building in the United States.

I just now noticed this table of strangers smiling behind us. Pretty hilarious.

Hands down the best meal of the weekend, at Luzzo’s.

Rounded out the weekend with a day trip out to Long Island to celebrate Mom.

Clip Two On.

Call me old fashioned, but I just love clip-on earrings.  I find them elegant and sophisticated, yet fun and funky–depending on the pair you choose.  I think, the brighter and bling-ier the better (if I had the money, I’d buy these Oscar de la Renta earrings in a second).

I also started to lean towards clip-ons because I tend to get terrible infections if I wear earrings with anything but gold posts–and who can afford that?!  Another bonus: they are so much easier to pack! I have damaged so many pairs of beautiful earrings because the posts snap in half in transit… clip-ons are great because you don’t have to worry about that!

1. Trifari, $14  |  2. Nordstrom, $28  |  3. Robert Lee Morris, $28

4. Carolee, $16  |  5. Bijoux Heart, $530  |  6. Anne Klein, $14  |  7. Kenneth Jay Lane, $80

8. Oscar de la Renta, $370  |  9. Erickson Beamon, $460  |  10. Chico’s, $35

My absolute favorite pair of earrings/clip-ons.  I’ve had these for several years, but still nothing compares… My best friend and I were on a serious vintage/consignment shopping kick back in college and we found these gems.  She originally planned to buy them for herself, but let me have them because she knew how much I loved them.

That’s true friendship!

Skylines Across the Miles

Etsy is such a diverse and creative site with so much to offer, but this, hands down, has to be one of the best products I have ever purchased on there.

Upon accepting my new life job in Charleston, I knew that I had to find something, preferably in the form of paper, to merge my two cities together.  I was combing through so many websites and so many shops and suddenly stumbled upon the Architette Studios shop on Etsy.

It was love at first sight and felt very fitting for my approaching long distance relationship.

I purchased this card–Jennifer includes two in your order–weeks before moving, and knew exactly what I’d include when sending the first card 750 miles up the coast to my boyfriend… a roundtrip ticket from LGA to CHS (I’d prefer if it were one-way, but the roundtrip will do for now!).

As for the second card… it’s currently sitting on a console table in my bedroom, framed.

Most Wanted

1. J.Crew chambray shirt  |  A wardrobe staple… I’ve had mine for one too many years and it has seen better days.

2.West Elm desk  |  Now that I’m officially a grown-up, living by myself, I feel it’s time that I invest in my own workspace.

3. Maya Brenner necklace  |  I love how delicate and simple these are, yet so special at the same time.

4. La Labo candle  |  I always thought this scent was too overpowering for my NYC apartment, but now it’s the only scent that seems to mask the dog smell in my current one.

5. Sesame Letterpress stationery  |  I can never have enough stationery and I feel like these were designed specifically for me in mind.

6. Jenni Kayne dress  |  Because who doesn’t want a dress like this one? You never know when it could come in handy!
