a day in the life

When I was home in mid-June, I had a chance to spend some quality time with Riley since she left the steamy South for the more moderate temperates up North; not to mention a large deck to lounge on, a fenced-in yard to run around in, and endless space to roam. I miss squeezing that face everyday, but I feel at ease knowing that she’s still just as spoiled with my parents in New York as she was with me in Charleston.

a day in the life

Between the two W’s–weddings and work–I’ll be away from Charleston more than I’ll actually be in Charleston this summer, so I made the executive decision to send Riley to summer camp to New York for the next several weeks (if anybody asks, I tell them she’s spending her summer in The Hamptons).

In order to make Riley’s last full-day in Charleston with me extra special, my parents and I took her to Kiawah so she could bask in the warm sunshine, burrow her head in the sand, and feel the ocean breeze in her hair (yes, breeze… she is not much of a water dog).

Seeing that big smile on her face made the exhausting and laborious cleanup well worth it.

a day in the life

Last Saturday, the weather was just too beautiful to be cooped up inside, so Riley and I took our usual weekend walk, but also spent time relaxing in the sun and playing with other pups. It was the perfect photo opp kind of day.

a day in the life

After the wet weather Charleston experienced last summer, my parents were kind enough to buy me a raincoat for Riley for her birthday. The little yellow number came right in time, as we had some torrential rain the evening it arrived. Riley was extremely excited to put it on, and she looked awfully snazzy in it, if I do say so myself.

a day in the life

Riley hit a major milestone last week and no detail was spared when it came to celebrating. She spent the eve of her big day at the beauty parlor and spent her actual Birthday at my office, feeling 10 lbs lighter.

Mike visited Charleston over the weekend and we made it our mission to make this Riley’s best Birthday yet. The evening consisted of party hats, noisemakers, presents, and a peanut butter banana cheese cake–her three favorite foods all rolled into one.

a day in the life

We all know how obsessed I am with my Golden Retriever, Riley, so it’s no surprise that I’ve decided to start documenting her every move some of her more eventful days in a new series called, A Day in the Life.

Since Riley’s been back in Charleston, I’ve slowly started taking her to my dog-friendly office. She’s a menace to society for the first hour or two–going through everyone’s trash cans, roaming from room to room, office to office–but come lunchtime, she’s typically quite good and I can actually get my work done without giving her a second thought. The hope here is that she’ll get less and less curious the more I bring her in. We’ll see how she does.
